JPG is a method of compressing still image data used in computers. JPG is often used for image file extensions compressed by the JPEG method. In some cases, JPEG etc. are used. It is commonly known as a lossy compression image format. It also supports lossless compression formats. The first release took place on September 18, 1992.
Why are there names for jpeg, jpg and two extensions? MS-DOS, which was popular in the 1980s, was limited to three characters in extension. JPEG has been utilized with JPG and three letter extensions.

HEIC was developed as a format by MPEG. It is an image file format defined in MPEG-H Part 12. With HEVC support, the compression ratio of still images/videos can be increased by up to 2x. macOS is supported by default. Windows must be opened using a paid Microsoft app.
