Specifies a subnet by combining an IPv4 IP address with a subnet mask.
Subnet mask
A subnet mask is a bit mask used to identify the network and hosts of an IP address. This mask divides the IP address into several subnets.
Network elements are part of the IP addresses that identify devices in the same community. Host elements are also used to discover devices within the selected network.
The subnet mask is represented as four decimal octets separated by dots, just like IPv4. Each bit of the subnet mask can be used to calculate the addressing of the network by performing a logical AND operation with the corresponding bits of the IP address, similar to IPv4.
By using subnet masks, a network director can streamline IP address management, improve protection, and overall performance. Additionally, it is important for optimizing route selection of routing protocols, data transfer performance, and community performance.
